When adult learners in Sioux Falls set out to sharpen skills, prepare for a milestone exam, or master English in a supportive, one-on-one environment, choosing the right guide makes all the difference. Whether your goals include career advancement, high school equivalency, U.S. citizenship, or simply building confidence in reading and writing, a seasoned Sioux Falls adult tutor knowledgeable in adult education can turn uncertainty into achievement. Here’s what to look for - and why Aaron S. Robertson at Mr. Robertson’s Corner checks every box.

Proven expertise and an adult education focus

Not all tutors understand the unique challenges adult learners face. Look for someone who combines subject-matter mastery with real-world experience and a dedication to adult education. Aaron S. Robertson moved to Sioux Falls in August 2024 after years as a professional educator and business leader in the greater Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, and he’s built his practice around lifelong learning and adult-centered pedagogy. He’s skilled in assessing adult strengths and challenges, and then he crafts lessons that respect busy schedules and diverse backgrounds.

Personalized private adult lessons

One key advantage of private adult lessons is customization. Effective tutors begin with a diagnostic assessment - reviewing goals, prior learning, and preferred learning styles - and then create a tailored roadmap.
  • Adult English lessons in Sioux Falls should address your specific needs, whether that’s conversation practice, grammar drills, or writing essays for college applications.
  • With Aaron’s background in liberal arts and classical pedagogies, he integrates seminar-style discussions, mimetic instruction, and real-world case studies to make lessons engaging and relevant.
"With my business background prior to entering the field of education, I really enjoy helping students make meaningful connections between what they're learning in the classroom and real-world work and life situations."
Specialized test prep: GED and U.S. citizenship

Preparing for a high-stakes exam demands specialized strategies.
  • As a GED tutor in Sioux Falls, Aaron offers structured support across all four GED content areas - math, language arts, science, and social studies - using proven practice-test protocols and targeted skill-building.
  • For those on the path to naturalization, a U.S. citizenship test tutor in Sioux Falls can demystify civics questions, guide you through the 100 official questions, and build the confidence you need to succeed on interview day. Aaron’s test prep tips draw on his years of standardized exam experience and his passion for social studies and civic education.
Flexible scheduling and local convenience

Adult learners juggle work, family, and community commitments. A top-tier Sioux Falls adult tutor will:
  • Offer a complimentary initial consultation.
  • Meet at times that fit your life - daytime breaks, evenings, or weekends.
  • Provide options for location: your home, a public library, or a cozy café.
Aaron’s versatile approach ensures that private adult lessons never feel like an added burden, but rather an investment in your future.

Clear communication and confidence building

Effective adult tutoring isn’t just content delivery - it’s a partnership. Seek a tutor who:
  • Establishes clear goals and timelines.
  • Provides regular progress updates and actionable feedback.
  • Encourages self-advocacy and independent learning, so you graduate from tutoring with both knowledge and confidence.
Aaron’s business background and educational philosophy emphasize the bridge between theory and practice, helping you see how each new skill applies directly to your work, your studies, or your role as a parent.

Local knowledge and community reputation

A tutor plugged into the Sioux Falls community brings extra value: familiarity with local school standards, connections to adult education centers, word-of-mouth testimony, and an extensive network of professionals. Aaron teaches at St. Joseph Academy, substitutes throughout Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, and has built a reputation for reliability, expertise, and genuine rapport with learners of all ages - qualities you can verify through testimonials on Mr. Robertson’s Corner.

Choosing a Sioux Falls adult tutor is more than an academic decision - it’s a step toward personal growth, career opportunities, and civic engagement. With Aaron S. Robertson’s blend of adult education expertise, private adult lessons, and specialized test prep services - from adult English lessons in Sioux Falls to expert GED tutoring and U.S. citizenship test preparation - you’re set for success.

I once worshipped worldly goods

By Aaron S. Robertson

For years, I did all in my power to prevent classic Lincoln cars I owned from rusting. Little did I know at the time that while I was fixated on preserving - and essentially what amounted to worshiping - worldly goods in a passing world, I was allowing my most valuable possession to rot out - my eternal soul. And no amount of Bondo could ever fill in those rust holes. No amount of carnauba wax could ever shine and protect my soul.

I am a free man brought back to life

By Aaron S. Robertson

Tired of always being on the lam - running and hiding and being afraid for over 20 years - I turned myself in at the nearest confessional in December 2021. I fully surrendered. I fully cooperated, telling all. And instead of being jailed for everything I did; instead of being condemned to death for everything I owned up to - I was set free. Because, you see, I was already in jail and didn't realize it. Indeed, I was already long dead and didn't know it. But because I surrendered on that day back in December 2021, I walked out a free man brought back to life. And I've been fully alive since then. I laid my burden down, and I have nothing to run from anymore.

Aaron Robertson - Hello from Sioux Falls!

Howdy! It's been a while since you've personally heard from me writing in my own voice on this blog. Sure, I've been busy sharing the beauty, truth, and joy of the Catholic faith here. I've been hard at work putting together a lot of biographies, exploring the world of music posts, content about the Soviet Union and the realm of International Relations, and even an article about the seemingly obscure topic of economic stagflation of 1974 plaguing the United States during the administration of President Gerald Ford following the resignation of President Richard Nixon. And speaking of President Gerald Ford, I recently bought a biography on him at a St. Vincent de Paul store, and so that piqued my interest in wanting to dive deeper into the Republican Party of the 1960s and 70s, sparking these essays on the post-Eisenhower split of the Republican Party into liberal and conservative wings, with the liberal/moderate faction being led by the likes of Nelson Rockefeller, among other figures. Yep, I've been pretty busy here. But again, it's been some time since you've heard from me on a personal note.

I sincerely hope this message finds you well! I don't even know where to begin in catching you up to speed on what I've been up to both personally and professionally over the last year or so. I'll give it my best here. This past August, 2024, I moved from the greater Milwaukee area in Wisconsin to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to be near my now-wife, Katie, who is a lifelong resident here. Katie and me first started talking on CatholicMatch.com back in May 2023, and we just married this past December (2024). In addition to loving my wife deeply, I've also really fallen in love with Sioux Falls and its surrounding communities. It's beautiful here. There is so much to explore in terms of nature, recreation, arts and entertainment, and dining. Exploring my new home with Katie has certainly kept me busy when I'm not working or spending time with family, namely the 16 nieces and nephews I inherited upon saying, "I do," adding to my sister's two boys back home.

Speaking of working, I am now teaching at a Catholic classical school called St. Joseph Academy. I just wrapped up the 2024-2025 school year teaching a combined grades 4/5 class there, as well as pre-algebra to a combined 6/7. For the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, I'll be teaching a combined 5/6, as well as algebra to 7/8. In addition to my teaching at St. Joseph Academy, I also work as a substitute teacher, substitute paraprofessional, and substitute after-school care assistant for Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools. I'm keeping busy working full-time this summer for O'Gorman's Summer Care program. And I'm working to grow my opportunities as a tutor in Sioux Falls and as a Catholic speaker in Sioux Falls.

As for the blog here, and in closing, it continues to be a labor of love bringing me great joy and satisfaction. It will be seven years ago later on this December, 2025, since I launched Mr. Robertson's Corner while working as a special education paraprofessional at Whitnall High School in Greenfield, Wisconsin, my first full-time job in K-12 education. Seven years already. Boy, does time fly. And since then, I'm grateful - truly grateful - to have gained your trust, support, and regular readership. It's you that keeps this project going strong for me. We're just a few posts away from 500, and we're approaching 1.5 million hits. Thank you so much for everything, and God bless!

Aaron

What to Look for in a Website That Provides Quality Resources for Homeschool Parents

In the world of homeschooling, the right resources can make all the difference. Whether you're new to teaching your kids at home or you're a seasoned pro looking for fresh material, finding a reliable online hub is essential. But with thousands of sites claiming to offer the best resources for homeschool parents, how do you know which ones actually deliver?

This guide breaks down exactly what to look for when evaluating a homeschooling website, so you can spend less time searching and more time teaching.

1. Clear Focus on Homeschooling Needs

A quality website tailored to homeschool parents should demonstrate a clear understanding of what homeschooling families actually need. This includes:

  • Lesson plans that align with various age groups and learning styles.
  • Curriculum guidance - whether for structured classical homeschooling or unschooling.
  • State-specific legal info about homeschooling regulations and requirements.
  • Support for parents navigating both academic and emotional aspects of homeschooling.
If a site feels too broad or watered down, it’s probably not optimized for the unique challenges of home education.

2. Curriculum Variety and Flexibility

Every homeschool family is different. A strong resource site should provide access to a variety of curriculum options, not just promote one method or publisher. Look for:
  • PDF downloads, interactive worksheets, and video lessons.
  • Subject-specific content: math, science, language arts, history, art, etc.
  • Materials for different grade levels - from preschool to high school.
  • Support for special education or gifted learners.
Sites that allow customization or suggest ways to mix and match resources are especially valuable for homeschool parents building their own educational path.

3. Ease of Navigation and Organization

A cluttered or outdated site wastes your time. Good homeschool resource websites are user-friendly, logically organized, and easy to search. Look for:
  • A clean menu layout with categories by subject, grade, or theme.
  • An efficient search function with filters.
  • Clear descriptions and previews of each resource before download or purchase.
  • Mobile responsiveness for use on phones or tablets.

The more intuitive the site, the quicker you can find what you need and get back to teaching.

4. Expertise and Credibility

Quality resources come from people who know what they’re doing. When evaluating a site, ask yourself: Are the materials created by certified educators or experienced homeschoolers?

  • Is there transparency about who runs the site and their qualifications?
  • Do they reference up-to-date educational standards?
Credibility matters, especially when it comes to teaching core subjects or preparing for college admissions.

5. Community and Support

Homeschooling can feel isolating. A strong website should offer community features and parent support, such as:
  • Active forums or comment sections.
  • Access to live Q&A sessions or webinars.
  • Printable planners and checklists.
  • Articles and blogs on homeschooling strategies, time management, and self-care.
Some of the best resources for homeschool parents come from other parents who’ve been through it and share their wisdom online.

6. Affordability and Transparency

Homeschooling can get expensive fast. Quality websites often offer:
  • A mix of free and paid resources.
  • Clear pricing - no hidden fees or surprise subscriptions.
  • Free trials or sample downloads.
  • Honest reviews and user ratings.

While not everything valuable has to be free, a site that balances affordability with quality is a win for any homeschool budget.

7. Regular Updates and Fresh Content

Education changes, and so do kids' needs. The best homeschool websites are updated regularly with:

  • New lesson plans tied to current events or seasons.
  • Updated legal info by state.
  • Fresh blog posts or user-submitted ideas.
  • Active email newsletters with highlights and teaching tips.

Outdated or abandoned sites won’t help you stay ahead of the curve.

8. Secured and Ad-Free Experience

Safety and focus matter, especially when kids are involved. Trustworthy sites that provide resources for homeschool parents should:

  • Be secure (look for "https").
  • Minimize or eliminate ads that distract or lead to inappropriate content.
  • Avoid clickbait and prioritize user experience over monetization.

A professional, distraction-free platform keeps the focus where it belongs - on learning.

Conclusion

Finding reliable resources for homeschool parents doesn’t have to be a gamble. By looking for clear focus, curriculum variety, ease of use, expert backing, community support, affordability, fresh content, and a secure experience, you’ll know when you’ve found a site worth bookmarking.

Homeschooling is a full-time job. Your resource site should feel like a trusted teaching partner - not just a content warehouse. Make sure it earns a place in your daily routine by offering tools that truly support your homeschool journey.

Finding the Right Sioux Falls Tutor: What to Look for in a High-Quality Sioux Falls Educator and Tutor

When it comes to academic achievement, many students and families in South Dakota’s largest city are searching for a reliable Sioux Falls tutor. Whether the goal is to improve grades, prepare for standardized tests, or develop better study habits, the right tutor can make all the difference. However, finding that perfect fit can be challenging. From qualifications to personality to teaching style, there’s no shortage of factors to consider. In this guide, we’ll delve into what students and parents should look for when they’re on the hunt for a top-notch Sioux Falls tutor who can truly drive learning success.

1. Proven Expertise and Qualifications

A primary consideration when seeking a Sioux Falls tutor is their area of expertise and professional background. Qualifications can come in various forms - some tutors may hold a teaching license, while others might be college professors, graduate students, or professionals with deep knowledge of a specific subject.
  • Subject Mastery: If a student needs help with high school algebra, then a tutor with a strong mathematical background is critical. If the student needs assistance in writing, look for someone with a demonstrated command of language arts or journalism.
  • Relevant Certifications: A professional teaching license or credential may indicate the tutor understands how to manage diverse learning styles.
  • Academic Achievements: Tutors who have consistently excelled in their own studies, participated in academic clubs, or conducted research in a particular field may offer advanced insights and up-to-date knowledge.
2. Teaching Experience and Track Record

Experience matters, especially when the goal is to help a student overcome particular academic challenges. An effective Sioux Falls tutor isn’t just knowledgeable - they also know how to communicate concepts in a way that resonates with each individual student.
  • Years of Tutoring: Someone who has spent several years tutoring will likely have honed their techniques and approaches.
  • Track Record of Success: Ask prospective tutors for references, recommendations, or success stories. If previous clients share how the tutor helped them turn failing grades into top scores, that’s a strong indicator.
  • Experience with Similar Student Demographics: A tutor who specializes in helping middle-schoolers transition into more complex subject matter, or who has worked extensively with high-schoolers, understands the academic and developmental challenges at those levels.
3. Personalized Learning Approach

One major reason families seek a private Sioux Falls tutor - rather than relying on conventional classroom instruction - is the benefit of individual attention. Look for a tutor who personalizes lesson plans to match a student’s abilities, learning style, and pace.
  • Diagnostic Assessment: High-quality tutors usually start by assessing a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and goals. This might involve reviewing past tests, homework assignments, or using diagnostic quizzes to pinpoint areas of struggle.
  • Customized Lesson Plans: Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all curriculum, a great tutor creates targeted lessons that keep the student both challenged and supported.
  • Adaptable Teaching Methods: Visual learners might need diagrams or videos, while kinesthetic learners might thrive on interactive activities. The best Sioux Falls tutors can tailor lessons to these individual preferences.
4. Clear and Open Communication

Open lines of communication between a tutor, student, and parents are crucial for progress. Before hiring a tutor in Sioux Falls, consider how they plan to update you on your student’s performance and goals.
  • Progress Reports: Some tutors provide regular written or verbal reports detailing how the student is improving, what areas need more focus, and which methods have proven most successful.
  • Collaborative Goal-Setting: Ensure there’s alignment on academic targets - such as acing the next math test, improving reading fluency, or preparing for the ACT.
  • Feedback Loop: A tutor who encourages questions and feedback from both the student and parents is generally more effective. They can pivot quickly if a particular method or resource isn’t working.
5. Familiarity with Sioux Falls Curriculum and Standards

Local knowledge can be a game-changer. A tutor in Sioux Falls who knows the academic benchmarks and curriculum of the local school districts and school systems, be they public or private - like Sioux Falls School District, Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools, St. Joseph Academy, etc. - will be better prepared to provide relevant and strategic guidance.
  • Alignment with State Standards: Understanding South Dakota’s academic standards ensures that tutoring sessions reinforce classroom learning and don’t introduce contradictory methods.
  • Awareness of Local Exams and Assessments: Whether it’s the Smarter Balanced Assessment or local district-wide tests, a tutor who’s familiar with these evaluations can structure sessions to boost test-taking confidence and skills.
  • Connection to Local Resources: Tutors plugged into the Sioux Falls education community may know about additional resources - such as local libraries, academic clubs, or community programs - that can further support student growth.
6. Positive Reviews and Reputation in the Community

Word of mouth remains one of the most reliable ways to identify a trusted Sioux Falls tutor. If you’re hearing consistent praise about someone’s ability to clarify tough concepts, maintain a professional schedule, and yield results, that’s a strong indication of quality.
  • Online Testimonials: Local directories, social media pages, and tutoring platforms often include testimonials from former clients. Look for details about improvements in test scores or increased self-confidence.
  • Local Referrals: Teachers, school counselors, or even other parents are great sources for recommendations. Sometimes, the best tutors aren’t widely advertised but have busy schedules based on glowing word-of-mouth alone.
  • Professional Partnerships: Tutors who collaborate with local schools, educational nonprofits, or after-school programs have additional credibility because these institutions usually vet tutors before partnering with them.
7. Flexible Scheduling and Availability

In a busy family, it’s essential that a Sioux Falls tutor can work with the student’s school hours, extracurricular activities, and other commitments. Remember, consistent sessions are key to sustained academic improvement.
  • After-School Sessions: Many families prefer late afternoon or early evening slots. A tutor who offers flexibility, or can even meet on weekends, may be more accommodating to your schedule.
  • Location: Decide whether you need in-person sessions at your home, at the local library, or if you’re open to online tutoring. Some tutors offer a hybrid approach that blends the convenience of online learning with the familiarity of face-to-face instruction.
  • Lesson Duration: Talk with your tutor about the ideal session length. Some students benefit from quick, focused sessions, while others might need longer blocks for in-depth discussions and practice.
8. Commitment to Building Confidence and Independence

Tutoring is not just about solving one difficult math problem or proofreading a single essay. The ultimate goal is to help the student become a confident, independent learner. A great tutor in Sioux Falls fosters an environment where students develop a lifelong love of learning.
  • Encouragement of Critical Thinking: Rather than simply giving answers, a tutor who asks guiding questions helps the student learn to solve problems independently.
  • Study Skills and Organization: Beyond subject matter, tutoring can help students learn how to better organize notes, manage their time, and prepare effectively for tests.
  • Motivation Techniques: Positive reinforcement, structured goal-setting, and celebrating small milestones can boost a student’s self-esteem and overall enthusiasm for schoolwork.
9. Professionalism and Reliability

While a friendly demeanor is important, professionalism is equally crucial. This includes punctuality, preparedness, respect for the student’s time, and maintaining a consistent tutoring schedule.
  • Background Checks: Many parents feel more comfortable hiring tutors who’ve undergone background checks or screenings, especially when sessions take place at home.
  • Professional Approach: A reliable Sioux Falls tutor shows up on time, communicates any schedule changes well in advance, and has structured lesson plans ready to go.
  • Reasonable Pricing: While high-level experts may charge more, transparent pricing and clear policies (such as cancellation fees or travel expenses) help everyone stay on the same page.
10. The Option of Online Tutoring

With technological advancements, online tutoring has become a convenient alternative for some families. If you can’t find the perfect local tutor, you might consider online sessions tailored to Sioux Falls students.
  • Wider Tutor Pool: Online tutoring platforms give access to specialized experts from across the country who might not be available locally.
  • Time and Fuel Savings: No need to commute - students can log in from the comfort of their home. This can open up more scheduling options and reduce travel stress.
  • Digital Tools: Many online tutors use interactive whiteboards, shared documents, and educational apps to make virtual sessions as engaging and hands-on as face-to-face instruction.
Conclusion: Make the Most of Your Sioux Falls Tutoring Search

Finding the right Sioux Falls tutor can transform a student’s academic outlook and performance. The journey often begins with pinpointing the child’s specific needs - whether it’s catching up on reading comprehension, tackling advanced calculus, or mastering critical study skills. From there, focus on tutoring professionals who have proven expertise, demonstrate effective communication, and align with local standards and teaching methods. Don’t forget to look for a tutor who blends approachability with professionalism, fosters genuine confidence in the student, and fits the family’s schedule.

A top-tier Sioux Falls tutor isn’t just another educational expense; it’s an investment in a child’s future, self-esteem, and love of learning. With the right support structure in place, students of all ages can conquer academic challenges and discover their true potential. Take your time in the search, ask plenty of questions, and rest assured that a solid partnership with an excellent tutor can open the door to lasting academic success.

Lincoln Continental Mark V

Aaron's note: The first car that I bought on my own was a 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V with a 400 cu. in. V-8 engine - purchased in the summer of 2002 when I came home after completing my freshman year of college. I remember learning it was made for the Florida market, which explained its turquoise leather seats and interior. The exterior was originally turquoise, as well, but a previous owner had it painted white. A beautiful car, it was 20 feet long, with the front hood itself taking up about five of those feet! It could seat six people, if needed, and it weighed about 4,600 pounds! It was a standard base model featuring oval opera windows, a nice Cartier hand clock that told the time in Roman numerals, and a speedometer that only went up to 80. I had the car for several years before selling it due to rising fuel and maintenance costs. Many happy memories. And so, in a fun post and a drive down memory lane for me, we take a look at the Mark V, manufactured by the Ford Motor Company as part of its Mark series. The Mark V itself was made between 1977-1979. Enjoy!

Introduction

The Lincoln Continental Mark V, manufactured by the Ford Motor Company from 1977 to 1979, is a hallmark of American luxury automobiles from the late 1970s. Known for its distinctive size, elegant design, and powerful engines, the Mark V is a quintessential example of the era's preference for opulence and comfort in automotive design. This essay explores the Mark V's power plants, production specifics, trim levels, stylistic features, and sales performance.

Power plants

The Lincoln Continental Mark V was equipped with two types of V-8 engines during its production run:

400 cu. in. (6.6-liter) Cleveland V-8:
This engine was standard in most states, delivering adequate power for the car's substantial size. It featured a 2-barrel carburetor and was noted for its smoother operation in urban settings. The 400 was the standard engine in all states for 1979 due to growing emissions regulations at the federal level.

460 cu. in. (7.5-liter) Lima V-8:
Optional or standard, depending on the state, due to emissions regulations. Not an option in any state for 1979. Known for its higher torque and power, the 460 V-8 was favored for its performance, particularly while under load or in highway cruising.

These engines represented Ford's response to consumer demands for performance without sacrificing the luxurious feel expected from a high-end model like the Mark V.

Production and manufacturing

The Mark V was produced over three model years with significant production numbers:

1977: Introduction year, catching the market with its fresh design.
1978: Peak production year, reflecting the model's popularity.
1979: Last production year, with numbers slightly tapering off as new models were on the horizon.

Ford manufactured the Lincoln Continental Mark V at its Wixom Assembly Plant in Michigan, a facility known for producing luxury models. This plant's association with high-end vehicle manufacturing ensured that the Mark V met quality standards expected by luxury car buyers.

Trim levels and stylistic features

The Mark V came in various trim levels, each offering a different blend of luxury and style:
  • Base model: Featured standard luxury touches expected from Lincoln, including plush seating and high-end audio systems.
  • Designer editions: Collaborations with famous fashion designers like Bill Blass, Cartier, Givenchy, and Pucci, each offering unique color schemes, interior fabrics, and exterior markings.
  • Collector's Series: A special trim level to mark the end of the Mark V production, featuring special paint colors, a padded vinyl roof, and luxurious interior appointments.
Stylistically, the Mark V was noted for its long hood, short deck profile, and sharp, angular lines, which were characteristic of the era. The opera windows, vinyl roof, and the spare tire hump on the trunk were signature elements that accentuated its luxury status.

Sales and market performance

The Lincoln Continental Mark V was a commercial success.

Sales: Consistently strong sales figures throughout its production run, with the peak in 1978. The luxury market's demand for big, stylish cars played a significant role in its sales performance.

Market position: The model reinforced Lincoln’s position in the luxury car market, competing directly with other high-end models from Cadillac and Chrysler.

Conclusion

The Lincoln Continental Mark V stands out as a symbol of late 70s luxury, combining powerful V-8 engines with a design that exuded elegance and a high level of craftsmanship. Its success in the market was not just due to its performance and style but also Ford's strategic manufacturing and marketing approaches. Today, the Mark V is celebrated among classic car enthusiasts for its iconic design and the era of automotive history it represents.

Happy 2023

Hello! It's certainly been a while. I hope you're doing well. Usually, since I launched this blog a little over four years ago, I've been in the habit of writing a "Happy New Year" post in which I review and reflect on the previous year. I've been a little behind in this, and am first really starting to catch up now, both with this post and with some other tasks and goals I wish to complete for this blog.

Looking back on 2022, it was a very exciting, adventurous, and rewarding year for me, on a variety of levels. Let's dive in.

To begin, I spent all of 2022 rediscovering and growing in my Roman Catholic faith after a very powerful conversion experience in December 2021. You can read why I'm Catholic, my battles with demonic harassment, and prayers that I've composed. As a part of my faith journey, I began teaching Sunday catechism to a group of fourth and fifth graders this past fall at my parish (church), and I also participate in a variety of adult formation programs at my parish, as well.

Back in mid-February, I left my full-time position as a special education paraprofessional at a middle/high school in order to work as a substitute educator again. I absolutely love it. As a sub, I do both teaching and paraprofessional work, and, minus a few days here and there for appointments or being sick, I've managed to work every day as a sub since mid-February. I've become a full-time professional sub, which is usually pretty rare to see, as many work part-time or hardly at all (they may be retired, have other jobs, etc.). But as I explain in this comprehensive guide I put together on how to become a substitute teacher or paraprofessional, these are unique, strange times for the world of K-12 education. There's a shortage of subs, a shortage of new education majors and student teachers coming up through the ranks, and a mass exodus of full-time seasoned staff from the profession. All of these factors, combined, have made available subs that much more valuable. Pay and other incentives are getting very competitive between districts and schools, and I'm spending most of the 2022-2023 school year in long-term gigs. Again, I'm absolutely loving it. I'm very blessed and grateful to be receiving calls all the time from teachers, paraprofessionals, school offices, and even principals and district-level staff wondering if I'm available to sub. Very blessed and grateful. There's no shortage of work and opportunity.

From January through August, I had the wonderful honor and privilege to work with a young man, a seventh grader, with Down Syndrome, providing respite care services to he and his family. We would go out for lunch/dinner or ice cream (we both love Culver's!), go to nearby parks, play in his yard, read, color, visit and learn about various community resources, and shoot hoops in his driveway. And while I would occasionally teach him some basic life skills, the learning was definitely a two-way street, with me learning a lot from him. I'm grateful to still be in touch with he and his family from time to time.

I didn't travel much during the year. And while it's definitely not the Key West, Florida trip I took the previous summer (2021), I did visit Door County, Wisconsin for the first time in many years, back in August. Also in August, I got to experience Appleton, Wisconsin a little bit when I traveled there for a cousin's wedding. Both trips were very nice.

In fall, I met my girlfriend, a fifth grade teacher. She is truly wonderful, and I'm more than blessed to have her in my life.

And in December, I turned 40. The big 4-0. Wow. I'm very grateful to have celebrated with family, neighbors, friends, and my wonderful girlfriend, and it was awesome to reconnect with several old college buddies. We vowed to keep in better touch.

Well, that's largely my 2022, in a nutshell. How was your year? I'd love to hear all about it! Feel free to share in the comments section below.

Wishing you and yours a healthy, joy-filled, and prosperous 2023! Thank you so much for your continued readership and support! God bless!

All the Best,

Aaron

I was a slacker in high school

I barely got out of high school on time, and I was either out of my mind or brilliant (or a little bit of both) for taking both the ACT and the SAT, because it was the SAT in the end that got me into my in-state college. At 36 and a Ph.D. student, I still have some regrets. Here's my story. Learn from me.

To use my own words, I was a total slacker in high school. A Slacker with a capital "S". It's been quite a while since I've seen any of the Back to the Future films, but whenever I do see any of them, I can imagine Principal Strickland speaking to me when he calls Marty McFly a slacker. These scenes, I joke, were made just for me.

I barely graduated high school on time. I had to make some credits up through mail order correspondence courses. How I got into college was a miracle. During spring semester of my senior year, I still did not have any schools lined up, because I slacked on applying to any. That was, until a recruiter from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee came out our way to Muskego High School one day for a presentation. I saw a flier hanging on the wall by the guidance office advertising the session and inviting students interested in attending to stop by guidance for a pass. I don't remember what class I had during that time, but I do recall that, whatever it was, I really wanted to skip it. No kidding. I just wanted to get out of class. So, I went down to guidance for my pass. And the rest, as they say, is history. I was immediately sold on the recruiter's presentation. She did an awesome job, and I quickly arranged for a tour of the campus. But now came the tricky part - getting admitted!

Now, I don't remember if I had already taken the ACT and SAT tests (yep, as much as I was a slacker, I took the SAT test for the heck of it!) by the time I met with the Stritch recruiter, or after. I do recall waiting 'til the last minute and taking them during that spring semester of my senior year, though. But I'm thankful I did happen to take the SAT test, because my ACT score ended up being too low to get into Stritch. The school, which ideally preferred the ACT, had a conversion calculator to determine what I would have received on the ACT by taking the SAT, so they used that score. Many say the ACT is supposed to be the easier of the two tests, but I found the opposite to be true in my case. I kept running out of time for each of the sections, and because of that, I left a lot of questions unanswered. Things seemed a lot smoother and more relaxed with the SAT in my case. Anyway, I did well on the admissions essay, and I was ultimately accepted through the university's conditional acceptance program, which meant my grades would be closely monitored for at least my first semester and my participation in co-curricular activities limited for a while. In effect, I was entering the university on academic probation right off the bat.

"Instead of plotting my own destiny, I allowed myself to just sort of drift around in the wind for a while, landing wherever and whenever the wind stopped for a moment or two."

All these years later, Stritch still can't seem to get rid of me, I joke. I'm in the school's Ph.D. program, and I actually joined the student government again this past school year as a senator - at the age of 35. My recruiter still works for Stritch, and we continue to keep in touch from time to time. Wonderful school with a lot of great people. Many happy memories created over the years.

Anyway, I'm sharing all of this with you, first off, because I enjoy looking back in time and laughing at myself and how it's truly a miracle that I managed to get out of high school in time and into college, but most importantly, I really want this to be a teachable moment.

See, I just didn't care about much of anything when I was in high school. It's not that I didn't want to learn. I loved to learn. But on my own terms, I guess. There were a few classes that I really enjoyed and got a lot out of, but the majority of them were just kind of "blah" to me. I was just there because I had to be. I wasn't involved in any clubs or activities, either. I was up very early in the morning for the bus, and so by the time the school day ended and I got off the bus, a ride which seemed to last forever, I just wanted to watch a little TV, eat dinner, and doze off. Some years later, in college, a few of my professors would explain to me that I probably just wasn't engaged. They told me that I obviously had the smarts to get into college, and that they've seen some impressive work produced by me.

Whatever the reason or reasons for my lack of interest and effort in high school, though, I still have some regrets all these years later. I sometimes wonder what opportunities I missed out on - what paths I may have inadvertently closed - by not taking high school more seriously. Instead of plotting my own destiny, I allowed myself to just sort of drift around in the wind for a while, landing wherever and whenever the wind stopped for a moment or two. I got into college mostly by sheer luck. And as much as I love Stritch and feel that the school has certainly prepared me for success in life and career, I still occasionally ask myself, "What if?" What if I had just one more conversation with someone back then on career paths, and that one conversation was the one life-changer I needed? What if my grades and test scores were higher? What if I took more initiative to learn outside of the classroom back then, and, as a result, really found something to be passionate about?

Don't have those same regrets. Don't put yourself in the position of having to wonder about all of the what-ifs. Take advantage of this time you have during these high school years. Start giving some serious thought early on as to what you may want to pursue for a career. Start thinking about any particular training, experiences, and higher education you may need for those careers you're exploring. Network and talk. Have conversations with family, friends of your family, family of your friends, teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, business owners, tradespeople, etc., etc. about options after high school. Research and dive into any relevant volunteer opportunities that may give you an edge on your resume. Time is on your side at this age, but the time will also go quickly enough, so don't squander it.

I joke that I did so poorly in high school the first time around, that I was sent back. Hopefully, I get it right this time, not for me, but for the students and families I have the pleasure and responsibility of serving. Perhaps I finally found my true calling all these years later.
