• Almighty God for keeping me alive long enough that I may be awakened from my long slumber in the dark wilderness to see the day of my powerful conversion in December 2021 and come to know Him while still in this world

I once worshipped worldly goods

For years, I did all in my power to prevent classic Lincoln cars I owned from rusting. Little did I know at the time that while I was fixated on preserving - and essentially what amounted to worshiping - worldly goods in a passing world, I was allowing my most valuable possession to rot out - my eternal soul. And no amount of Bondo could ever fill in those rust holes. No amount of carnauba wax could ever shine and protect my soul.

I am a free man brought back to life

Tired of always being on the lam - running and hiding and being afraid for over 20 years - I turned myself in at the nearest confessional in December 2021. I fully surrendered. I fully cooperated, telling all. And instead of being jailed for everything I did; instead of being condemned to death for everything I owned up to - I was set free. Because, you see, I was already in jail and didn't realize it. Indeed, I was already long dead and didn't know it. But because I surrendered on that day back in December 2021, I walked out a free man brought back to life. And I've been fully alive since then. I laid my burden down, and I have nothing to run from anymore.

Aaron Robertson - Hello from Sioux Falls!

Howdy! It's been a while since you've personally heard from me writing in my own voice on this blog. Sure, I've been busy sharing the beauty, truth, and joy of the Catholic faith here. I've been hard at work putting together a lot of biographies, exploring the world of music posts, content about the Soviet Union and the realm of International Relations, and even an article about the seemingly obscure topic of economic stagflation of 1974 plaguing the United States during the administration of President Gerald Ford following the resignation of President Richard Nixon. And speaking of President Gerald Ford, I recently bought a biography on him at a St. Vincent de Paul store, and so that piqued my interest in wanting to dive deeper into the Republican Party of the 1960s and 70s, sparking these essays on the post-Eisenhower split of the Republican Party into liberal and conservative wings, with the liberal/moderate faction being led by the likes of Nelson Rockefeller, among other figures. Yep, I've been pretty busy here. But again, it's been some time since you've heard from me on a personal note.

I sincerely hope this message finds you well! I don't even know where to begin in catching you up to speed on what I've been up to both personally and professionally over the last year or so. I'll give it my best here. This past August, 2024, I moved from the greater Milwaukee area in Wisconsin to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to be near my now-wife, Katie, who is a lifelong resident here. Katie and me first started talking on CatholicMatch.com back in May 2023, and we just married this past December (2024). In addition to loving my wife deeply, I've also really fallen in love with Sioux Falls and its surrounding communities. It's beautiful here. There is so much to explore in terms of nature, recreation, arts and entertainment, and dining. Exploring my new home with Katie has certainly kept me busy when I'm not working or spending time with family, namely the 16 nieces and nephews I inherited upon saying, "I do," adding to my sister's two boys back home.

Speaking of working, I am now teaching at a Catholic classical school called St. Joseph Academy. I just wrapped up the 2024-2025 school year teaching a combined grades 4/5 class there, as well as pre-algebra to a combined 6/7. For the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, I'll be teaching a combined 5/6, as well as algebra to 7/8. In addition to my teaching at St. Joseph Academy, I also work as a substitute teacher, substitute paraprofessional, and substitute after-school care assistant for Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools. I'm keeping busy working full-time this summer for O'Gorman's Summer Care program. And I'm working to grow my opportunities as a tutor in Sioux Falls and as a Catholic speaker in Sioux Falls.

As for the blog here, and in closing, it continues to be a labor of love bringing me great joy and satisfaction. It will be seven years ago later on this December, 2025, since I launched Mr. Robertson's Corner while working as a special education paraprofessional at Whitnall High School in Greenfield, Wisconsin, my first full-time job in K-12 education. Lincoln Continental Mark V

Aaron's note: The first car that I bought on my own was a 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V with a 400 cu. in. V-8 engine - purchased in the summer of 2002 when I came home after completing my freshman year of college. I remember learning it was made for the Florida market, which explained its turquoise leather seats and interior. The exterior was originally turquoise, as well, but a previous owner had it painted white. A beautiful car, it was 20 feet long, with the front hood itself taking up about five of those feet! It could seat six people, if needed, and it weighed about 4,600 pounds! It was a standard base model featuring oval opera windows, a nice Cartier hand clock that told the time in Roman numerals, and a speedometer that only went up to 80. I had the car for several years before selling it due to rising fuel and maintenance costs. Many happy memories. And so, in a fun post and a drive down memory lane for me, we take a look at the Mark V, manufactured by the Ford Motor Company as part of its Mark series. The Mark V itself was made between 1977-1979. Enjoy!

Happy 2023

Hello! It's certainly been a while. I hope you're doing well. Usually, since I launched this blog a little over four years ago, I've been in the habit of writing a "Happy New Year" post in which I review and reflect on the previous year. I've been a little behind in this, and am first really starting to catch up now, both with this post and with some other tasks and goals I wish to complete for this blog.

Looking back on 2022, it was a very exciting, adventurous, and rewarding year for me, on a variety of levels. Let's dive in.

To begin, I spent all of 2022 rediscovering and growing in my Roman Catholic faith after a very powerful conversion experience in December 2021. You can read why I'm Catholic, my battles with demonic harassment, and prayers that I've composed. As a part of my faith journey, I began teaching Sunday catechism to a group of fourth and fifth graders this past fall at my parish (church), and I also participate in a variety of adult formation programs at my parish, as well.

Back in mid-February, I left my full-time position as a special education paraprofessional at a middle/high school in order to work as a substitute educator again. I absolutely love it. As a sub, I do both teaching and paraprofessional work, and, minus a few days here and there for appointments or being sick, I've managed to work every day as a sub since mid-February. I've become a full-time professional sub, which is usually pretty rare to see, as many work part-time or hardly at all (they may be retired, have other jobs, etc.). But as I explain in this comprehensive guide I put together on how to become a substitute teacher or paraprofessional, these are unique, strange times for the world of K-12 education. There's a shortage of subs, a shortage of new education majors and student teachers coming up through the ranks, and a mass exodus of full-time seasoned staff from the profession. All of these factors, combined, have made available subs that much more valuable. Pay and other incentives are getting very competitive between districts and schools, and I'm spending most of the 2022-2023 school year in long-term gigs. Again, I'm absolutely loving it. I'm very blessed and grateful to be receiving calls all the time from teachers, paraprofessionals, school offices, and even principals and district-level staff wondering if I'm available to sub. Very blessed and grateful. There's no shortage of work and opportunity.

From January through August, I had the wonderful honor and privilege to work with a young man, a seventh grader, with Down Syndrome, providing respite care services to he and his family. We would go out for lunch/dinner or ice cream (we both love Culver's!), go to nearby parks, play in his yard, read, color, visit and learn about various community resources, and shoot hoops in his driveway. And while I would occasionally teach him some basic life skills, the learning was definitely a two-way street, with me learning a lot from him. I'm grateful to still be in touch with he and his family from time to time.

I didn't travel much during the year. And while it's definitely not the Key West, Florida trip I took the previous summer (2021), I did visit Door County, Wisconsin for the first time in many years, back in August. Also in August, I got to experience Appleton, Wisconsin a little bit when I traveled there for a cousin's wedding. Both trips were very nice.

In fall, I met my girlfriend, a fifth grade teacher. She is truly wonderful, and I'm more than blessed to have her in my life.

And in December, I turned 40. The big 4-0. Wow. I'm very grateful to have celebrated with family, neighbors, friends, and my wonderful girlfriend, and it was awesome to reconnect with several old college buddies. We vowed to keep in better touch.

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! I can't believe, and I'm sure you're with me on this one, how quickly summer went! I'm scratching my head here, still trying to figure it out. Perhaps even more perplexing for me is that we're in the year 2022, quickly headed into 2023. I'll be turning the big 4-0 later on this year. Time sure does fly. I remember the 1999-2000 school year like it was yesterday. I was a junior in high school, and I remember all the fear and anxiety across the globe about machines, ATMs, clocks, calendars, etc. possibly not working when we reached the year 2000. Now here we are, nearly 23 years later. Wow.

Oh, well. In any case, here we are. A new school year. A new start of sorts.

First day of school of 2022-2023 for me, September 1. Celebrating with my very first Yeti for hot, industrial-strength coffee all day! Who’s ready to learn and grow?! Let’s do this! Cheers, all!

 

My summer went well. Back in late June, I took a stroll through my church's cemetery for the very first time, and I was genuinely amazed at the centuries-old history and the scenic beauty that is present there.

In early August, I went on a trip to Door County, Wisconsin with my parents for a few days. I can't even remember the last time I was up there, it had been so long. We stayed at the Open Hearth Lodge in Sister Bay. A very nice place. We really enjoyed our stay there. For those of you not very familiar with Door County, it's that "left thumb" of Wisconsin on the map. It runs along Lake Michigan. It's about 2.5 hours or so from the Milwaukee area. Door County's economy is heavily dependent on tourism and the manufacturing and marketing of specialty foods and beverages. Beautiful state parks, county parks, beaches, shops, restaurants, wineries, farms, and other tourist attractions dot the county. While Door County is home to a diverse variety of farming and agricultural goods, it is perhaps most famous for its cherries. Door County's famous cherries are put into anything and everything from pies and other baked goods, to jams, salsas, wines, even coffees and liquors. We came home with bags of gourmet munchies and coffees.

Here's a picture of an alpaca I took at the Wisconsin State Fair, which takes place each year in early August. I love both alpacas and the Wisconsin State Fair. Usually, I'll go to the Fair multiple times per year. I'll usually buy advanced tickets at a discount, and I love to just walk the grounds, people watch, and check out some of the bands and vendor booths without any particular agenda. This year, however, I only made it to the Fair twice. You can check out more alpaca pictures at my Instagram page.

Also in August, I spent a good amount of time building out some new pages on this blog to offer even more personal finance resources for students and teachers. It was a fun project to work on, and it's a subject I'm particularly passionate about.

Near the end of August, I went up to Appleton with my mom for a cousin's wedding. We stayed at the Hilton Appleton Paper Valley hotel, located in the heart of downtown, for two nights. I can't remember the last time I was up to Appleton, either. What a happening college town. A lot to see and do at any given time. On Friday night, local car enthusiasts and car clubs cruised downtown in front of our hotel in their classic, muscle, hot rod, and modified cars. That was fun to see. On Saturday morning, we checked out a large farmers market taking place downtown in front of our hotel. It stretched for blocks, and they closed the streets for it. A lot of variety, anything from produce and baked goods to coffee and specialty foods. And then of course, there was the wedding, the very reason why we were up there! That was a lot of fun. I hadn't seen my cousins and other family in a number of years. It was a good time to reconnect and recommit, and we all vowed to keep in touch and see each other more often. On Sunday morning, I went to Mass at St. Joseph Parish, right next door to our hotel. A beautiful church, it was built in 1867. The church also has a prayer garden with a statue of Blessed Solanus Casey, and I appreciated the opportunity to pray there for a while, as well.

Throughout the summer, I spent a little time here and there building my baseball card collection. The sports card market is back on fire, and I'm feeling like a kid in a candy store after having visited some card shows and shops this summer. I'm having a blast reliving my days collecting as a kid!

Finally, I continued throughout the summer working on both my Ph.D. dissertation studies and my spiritual life since rediscovering my Roman Catholic faith back in December after nearly 20 years.

My summer 2021

Hello! It's been a while. I hope this post finds you well. I had a very productive and fun summer this year, and I hope you did, as well.

Summer School

For starters, I worked my very first summer school. I assisted middle school students in three social studies -related courses: Geography Bee, Let's Plan a Trip, and Latin America. I love social studies. As evidence of that statement, I offer to you my college major, which was political science. I also graduated with minors in sociology and philosophy. I participated in Model United Nations for five out of my six years in college. And now, as a Ph.D. student, I'm studying China's rise to power on the international stage, as well as aspects of the Cold War and Soviet history and economics. Love social studies. Did I make myself clear on that point? If not, let me try again - I LOVE SOCIAL STUDIES!!!

But in all seriousness, and getting back on point here, helping with summer school was a very rewarding experience for me, and I hope to work summer school in my district next year.

What made it so awesome for me was that I got to learn with the students. Sure, some of the countries and topics discussed in these courses I was already familiar with. But there were also so many new things I learned. Let's Plan a Trip, in particular, was a really cool class. Students in this course were tasked with researching countries they would be interested in visiting. Each week, they gave a presentation to the class on their findings. If I remember correctly, summer school was five weeks long, so students in this course gave a total of five presentations, one new country or region each week. These presentations included details like hotels to stay at, attractions to see and experience, local cuisine and culture, interesting trivia and history, costs and budgets, and flight details.

Another wonderful aspect of my summer school experience was simply getting to meet and begin building connections with quite a few new students. Many of these students are incoming 7th graders at the middle/high school I work at (in the district I work for, middle school starts at 7th grade, and the school I work at is a combined middle and high school).

STEM Camp

Immediately after summer school ended, I got a chance to stick around for one more week to work a STEM -themed camp that my district organized. This, too, was very enjoyable, and again, I loved learning right alongside the students. I was in two sessions - one was on rockets, and the other was about coding. Check out the paper airplane I flew in the rockets class. At the end of the week, we flew - you guessed it - rockets. That was a lot of fun, and we were very lucky to have a beautiful, calm, sunny day for it.

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Key West for the first time back in August. Over the course of the coming days and weeks, I look forward to sharing with you my trip to Key West through recollections, photos, stories, histories of the island and some of its more well-known residents, reviews, and travel tips. Rather, private families are my direct employers, and BDS, through its BDS Fiscal arm, serves as fiscal agent, compensating me for my services. In this capacity, I primarily work with middle school and high school students outside of the school day on building daily living skills and learning how to access various community resources. Examples may include visiting a store with a set shopping list and budget while learning how to interact with store staff at checkout and when help is needed; or visiting the local public library and learning how to search for items and interact with library staff at checkout and whenever further assistance may be needed. I also provide mentoring and respite care. Strong, ongoing communication and relationship building with parents and families, along with occasional written reports, are critical for success in this role.
